Orienteering in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire

Summer Series event, Whiteleaf, Wednesday 21st July

The next Summer Series event will take place at Whiteleaf next Wednesday, 21st July. It's a very nice area with some excellent runnable areas, and even the green bits were not too overgrown when I was last there about two weeks ago. It is a bit hilly though, so expect a fair bit of climb. The compensation is the spectacular view from the start / finish area - so let's hope for a nice clear evening.

The car park is at SP 824 036 at the top of the steep hill up from Monks Risborough.

There will be the usual mass start at 7:30pm, which will take place from the open area above Whiteleaf Cross. It's about 5 minutes walk from the car park. If it is a sunny evening, we might walk people over to the start area from about 7:15, so that people can enjoy the view. If you arrive after that time and there is nobody in the car park, just take the path from the far end of the car park, and follow it north. It is a very clear and obvious path, which goes through a gate after about 400m, and into the open area.

update 15/7/10 18:30 Following a few comments about course lengths and it getting dark early under the tree canopy particularly if it is a cloudy evening, I am changing the A course at Whiteleaf to be just a combination of courses Y and Z. So A will now be a mere 3.7k and 140m of climb. Of course, if you are back early and fancy some more exercise, then you will be able to knock off the X course as well .......... But it also means that you should make the pub by 9 o'clock.

There will be the usual range of courses (A class run Y+Z, B class run Z only, C class run X only):

X - 1.7km, 70m, 6 controls;
Y - 1.2km, 50m, 3 controls;
Z - 2.5km, 90m, 7 controls.

The pub for after the event is the Pink and Lily at Parslow's Hillock, about 1.5km South of Whiteleaf. They serve food until 9pm. The website is http://www.pinkandlily.co.uk/ It might be worth phoning ahead if you plan to eat there, especially if you think you will be arriving close to (or even after) 9pm - they do sound very obliging.

Look forward to seeing you next Wednesday.,

Alun Jones.
