Saturday Series planners wanted!
It seems ironic, that following a record turnout of some 90 orienteers, on the last Saturday Series event at Culham (23rd January: huge thanks to Mikhail for putting an event in a new area), that I am currently contemplating curtailing the series after the event at Whiteleaf in March. This is due to a lack of volunteers to plan/organise the remaining events. However Yvonne and I are discussing ways of putting on an event at Cholesbury and Hawridge Commons, using the new map that Andrew and his army of new mappers is in the process of compiling. At present I have no planner for events in May (possibly 22nd) and June (possibly 19th). Bob Beresford is considering updating another new area (Penn Wood, mapped a while back by Roger Lott, but never used) which we would have liked to have used for the June event.
This is a real pity as our coaches have been doing sterling work in getting brand new punters interested during the coaching events in January and February. We do need continuity to nurture that growing interest.
Our sport relies on volunteers and it has been difficult through the last 3 years to get planners for the Saturday Series. No volunteers means no sport! When was the last time you planned, controlled or organised an event? This is a great opportunity to learn out how to plan (we only require 3 courses). I will gladly help with the OCAD work and planning the courses. So I am making one last attempt to enlist this club's support to attract newcomers. Please contact me if interested mark.thompson@uk.bp.com or call me in the evenings 01753 893590. I will also take volunteers for new seasons events starting in September 2010.
